Most Gold Reserves

Understand most gold reserves: what the measure counts, how to read it and where to check the source.

Official gold reserves are gold held by monetary authorities, not deposits still underground. Their value changes with the gold price even when their weight is unchanged. A country can mine a large amount of gold without its central bank holding much, and the reverse is also possible. Comparing tonnes avoids confusing price movements with new purchases.
